Shakuntala Banaji

Dr Shakuntala Banaji is Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Communications at LSE, where she also serves as Director of Graduate Studies and Programme Director for the MSc Media, Communication and Development. She has won numerous prizes for her teaching on International Media and the Global South, Film theory and World Cinema, and Critical Approaches to Media, Communication and Development. Her current research addresses the intersection between socio-political contexts, media literacy, identities and participation with a focus on the ways in which media and political education can be deployed to support more critical social-justice oriented versions of active citizenship. Her recent monographs include Children and Media in India: narratives of class, agency and social change, and WhatsApp Vigilantes: An exploration of citizen reception and circulation of misinformation leading to violence in India while her co-edited collection Youth Active Citizenship in Europe is out with Palgrave in June 2020.
